Fixed RetainersThese are fitted behind the front teeth to prevent relapse of spacing or significant rotations. Fixed retainers are usually required until a year after wisdom teeth have been extracted, but are often kept in place for life. If you would ever want the retainer removed, a removable retainer is recommended. Fixed retainers are an additional benefit for patients. They are expensive to make and fit. You should avoid biting into very hard foods that may damage them. Fixed retainers are usually kept in place for life. We will rebond a broken retainer for 12 months at no charge. A lost fixed retainer will be charged for a new retainer. Fixed retainers fees vary from $75 - 175. Patients with fixed retainers may also have a removable retainer for occasional night time wear, and for emergencies.

If you have a removable retainer as well, this should be worn over the broken fixed retainer until you can be seen at the earliest appointment.
